Educational Programs

At Houghton Mifflin, we believe every individual has the right to be educated.

The Gerda and Kurt Klein Scholarship
The Gerda and Kurt Klein Scholarship Houghton Mifflin and the Kleins share a common mission: enlightenment through education. Holocaust survivor Gerda Klein and her husband, Kurt, have spent a lifetime teaching young people about the injustices of their past, and advocating for tolerance and positive change. This $10,000 scholarship recognizes annually one high school student who works to affect change in his or her own community by fostering ethnic and religious tolerance and acting against bigotry and hatred.

Through this scholarship, Houghton Mifflin is proud to recognize Gerda and Kurt Klein's achievements and to encourage more young people to take action for these important causes.

Applications are available at http://www.hmco.com/pdf/klein_scholarship.pdf and must be received by August 30, 2008.  For more information, and to download a brochure, click here.

The ALAS/Houghton Mifflin scholarship recognizes Latino administrators and principals by providing support for advanced education. The $10,000 award will be given to a member of ALAS in good standing, who is an aspiring school leader pursuing an advanced degree in education with the goal of becoming a superintendent. The scholarship must be used towards an advanced degree in education.

United Way Math, Science and Technology After-School Initiative
In addition to its annual support through employee workplace campaigns, Houghton Mifflin is a founding sponsor of the United Way of the Massachusetts Bay (UWMB) Math, Science and Technology After-School Initiative. Houghton Mifflin has partnered with UWMB, Boston-area life sciences and biomedical industries, and public and private community partners to grow and sustain a community collaborative that fosters an active and ongoing interest in the life sciences.

Through quality educational programs, mentoring, internships, and hands-on experience for middle-school youth, the Math, Science and Technology After-School Initiative hopes to become a new model for after-school programs while increasing employment opportunities and job placement in the biomedical and related industries.

The Courage of Boston's Children Max Warburg Courage Curriculum
Since its founding in 1991, the Max Warburg Courage Curriculum and Houghton Mifflin have shared a mission to empower children to recognize courage in their own lives. Through a combination of education resources, volunteerism, professional support, and student/teacher recognition, this highly valued curriculum has inspired a love of reading and writing in Boston and Fall River public schools, and promoted a profound appreciation for moral courage in children's lives.

Literacy for All
Whether it's accessible curriculum or access to reading materials, Houghton Mifflin continues its mission to bring educational materials and literature to the community through various long-standing book donation partnerships and sponsorships. Through organizations like the National Braille Press, which recently honored Houghton Mifflin as the founding sponsor of the Children's Braille Book Club, and initiatives that involve the donation of thousands of books, as with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services, Houghton Mifflin will continue to be a leading advocate in providing literacy for all.

Boston Public Library Foundation Boston Public Library Foundation
As two historical Boston icons, Houghton Mifflin and the Boston Public Library (BPL) have built a literary foundation and an enduring partnership that continues to enrich the lives of others by fulfilling the lifelong need to learn. The two organizations continue their long-standing relationship with initiatives like the Collaborative Schools Program, which focuses on engaging Boston's K–12 public, private, parochial, and charter school students in creative writing and design. The Collaborative Creative Writing and Design Contest has bridged the resources at the Boston Public Library with Boston's rich cultural heritage since 1993.

National Council for Family Literacy (NCFL)
Continuing our commitment to support, foster and encourage family literacy, Houghton Mifflin is proud to co-sponsor the National Center for Family Literacy's (NCFL) Literacy Champion program. NCFL has pioneered a program that combines children's education, adult literacy education, parent education, and structured interaction between parents and their children, and works to ensure that all families have opportunities to improve their education and social well-being through quality family literacy services.
