Houghton Mifflin is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the environment, and committed to the health and well-being of our community.
Fund for Racial and Religious Understanding
Houghton Mifflin provides various grants to nonprofit organizations whose education initiatives promote racial and religious tolerance and understanding. Organizations that have received grants from the Fund for Racial and Religious Understanding include the following:
- Anti-Defamation League of New England is a regional chapter of the world's leading organization in fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice, and bigotry.
- Educators for Social Responsibility teaches social responsibility as a core practice in education so that young people develop the convictions and skills to shape a safe, sustainable, democratic, and just world.
- Facing History and Ourselves engages teachers and students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.
- National Conference for Community and Justice strives to make communities more inclusive and just through its advocacy, conflict resolution, and education initiatives across faith lines with youth, educators, workplace leaders, news and media, and government.
- Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance, the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, challenges visitors to confront bigotry and racism, and understand the Holocaust in both historic and contemporary contexts.
United Way
For more than forty years, Houghton Mifflin has supported the vision and values of the United Way. Annual Company and divisional employee campaigns have helped to continue the United Way mission while sustaining Boston- and Chicago-area United Way agencies. The Company is co-sponsor of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay Courage Award, which recognizes an individual or family whose triumph over adversity most embodies the quality of courage, and the Math, Science and Technology After-School Initiative, whose mission is to foster an active and ongoing interest in the life sciences.
Environmental Awareness Initiatives
Houghton Mifflin requires our employees and vendors to conduct business in a manner that reduces impact on the environment, promotes conservation of energy and natural resources, and complies in all respects with applicable laws designed to protect the natural and workplace environment. We mirror our code of conduct guidelines in our recycling programs, and support the efforts of hundreds of national organizations that are working to protect and preserve our environment through our matching gifts program and annual Earth Share employee fundraising campaign.
