Houghton Mifflin and ALAS Announce Scholarship for Aspiring Superintendents

Annual Scholarship Recognizes Leadership in Education, Supports Administrators Pursuing Advanced Degrees in Education

BOSTON — June 21, 2006 — Houghton Mifflin Company and the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) announced the creation of a new scholarship to recognize educational leadership and support the advancement of aspiring administrators. The annual award will be given to one administrator who is a member of ALAS and is pursuing an advanced degree in education to become a school superintendent.

"The Latino population is the largest and fastest growing minority population in the United States, and we need to continue to promote opportunities for Latino administrators," said Tony Lucki, president and CEO of Houghton Mifflin Company. "This scholarship underscores Houghton Mifflin's commitment to supporting the advancement of our schools' most promising educational leaders."

The winner of the 2006 ALAS/Houghton Mifflin Scholarship will be announced during the ALAS National Meeting, November 2–4, in Austin, Texas.

"Our mission to improve the educational accomplishments of Latino youth begins with strengthening the skills of our educators," said Wilfredo T. Laboy, Ed.D., president of ALAS and superintendent of the Lawrence Public School District in Massachusetts. "We are thrilled to offer this scholarship in partnership with Houghton Mifflin Company, and we recognize this as an important program in highlighting the need to develop the promising leaders in our schools."

Application forms and additional information about the scholarship are available at http://www.hmco.com/company/communities/education.html. Applications must be received by August 1, 2006.
