Great Source Teams Up with America SCORES to Provide Teacher Training for
Afterschool Program
BOSTON — June 27, 2007 — Great Source, a division of Houghton Mifflin
Company, today announced a new partnership with America SCORES, a nonprofit
organization dedicated to bringing soccer, creative writing and
service-learning to urban communities nationwide. Both organizations share a
common goal: To ensure literacy for all students.
Through this unique partnership, Great Source will provide intensive workshops
year-round at no cost to teachers who participate in the afterschool SCORES
program. These workshops, designed specifically for America SCORES, will focus
on research-based strategies to help improve students' writing skills.
"Great Source and America SCORES are well aligned in their missions," said
Steve Tapp, president, Great Source. "I am pleased that we are able to offer
high-quality teacher training to those educators who are committed both during
the school day and afterschool to help close the achievement gap for our urban
students."
"America SCORES is very pleased to be able to offer these top-notch
professional development classes to our writing coaches," said America SCORES
National Education Director Michelle Shedro. "Teachers and schools in the
urban areas that our program serves often get overlooked when it comes to
innovative resources, so I applaud Great Source for the service they are
helping to provide to educators and children in these underserved communities."
The Great Source workshops launched in March in Atlanta, and are now available
to teachers in all fifteen cities in which America SCORES has established
programs. To learn more about these workshops, or for information on how to
participate, please contact Peggy Hart, director of professional development,
Great Source, at 978-661-7192.
