Discover! Simulations Recognized as One of New England's Best
CAMBRIDGE, MA — November 1, 2005 — Houghton Mifflin Company and Six Red
Marbles announced today that Houghton Mifflin's Discover! Simulations
product has been selected as a finalist in the Education and Learning category
for the 10th Annual MITX Awards. Produced by the Massachusetts Innovation &
Technology Exchange, the MITX Awards recognize excellence in the creation of
interactive technologies designed, produced or developed in New England. The Discover!
Simulations are an integrated technology solution for the new Houghton
Mifflin Science textbook program for grades K–6.
Begun in 1996, the MITX Awards is the largest and most prestigious awards
competition in the country for technology innovations and celebrates the best
creative and technological accomplishments emerging from New England.
"This is a special milestone for the organization and the commercial Internet
industry as a whole, both of which have seen significant change, myriad
successes and unprecedented growth over the past decade. As technology
advances, we will be at the forefront of those advancements," said Kiki Mills,
executive director of MITX. "Our awards finalists continue to raise the bar,
and their work is a true testament to how interactive technology has become a
core technology for businesses across all industries, nonprofits and
educational institutions."
The Discover! Simulations for grades K–6 consist of 42 Flash-based
science simulations that provide an interactive way for students to explore
real-world science concepts. An integral part of Houghton Mifflin's new
science textbook series, the Discover! Simulations offer students an
interactive way to explore concepts presented in their textbooks while meeting
both state and national science standards. With six simulations per grade
level — 2 Earth Science, 2 Physical Science, and 2 Life Science — students are
provided with a variety of learning experiences.
"Our Discover! Simulations help deliver key science concepts in
different ways and bring science to life for young minds," said Kirby
Mansfield, vice president and editor-in-chief, Mathematics, Science, and
Instructional Technology, Houghton Mifflin School Division. "We are pleased
that our collaboration with Six Red Marbles has been recognized by MITX, in
the nation's premier technology award competition."
Houghton Mifflin and Six Red Marbles will be recognized with the other
finalists in the category of Education and Learning at a gala awards ceremony
traditionally attended by over 800 of the region's top interactive technology
and business professionals. Winners will be announced at the ceremony in the
Boston Copley Place Marriott on Wednesday, November 2nd. Tickets can be
purchased at www.mitxawards.org.
The 2005 MITX Awards program is sponsored by AOL, Doubleclick, Eyeblaster,
IBM, Nixon Peabody LLP, Pointroll, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC and Backbone
Media. Media partners are boston.com and Technology Review.
