Houghton Mifflin Names Lee Jones President of Riverside Publishing Company

BOSTON — August 23, 2004 — Houghton Mifflin Company today announced that Lee Jones has been named president of Riverside Publishing Company. Jones joins the Company from The College Board, where he served as vice president of K–12 development and operations, overseeing all K–12 programs and services.

"Lee has a tremendous track record in assessment, both academically and operationally," said Sylvia Metayer, executive vice president, president of Houghton Mifflin Assessment Group. "He is a great leader whose experience in the K–12 space will guide Riverside's growth in the coming years."

Jones has held a number of prestigious positions in the testing industry. Over a period of nine years at Educational Testing Service (ETS), Jones held a series of positions, including associate program director of science assessment for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), program director of assessment development and research for the AP program, and executive director of financial and resource planning for the College Board programs. At the National Research Council (NRC), Jones served as senior program officer of the board of testing and assessment and director of the board on international comparative studies in education. In this position, he oversaw the evaluation of NAEP and various other studies for the U.S. Department of Education, working with the top thinkers in education and assessment. At The College Board, Jones was executive director of the AP program, transforming it into the fastest-growing program in the organization and significantly increasing revenue. Most recently, Jones was vice president of K–12 development and operations, overseeing all of The College Board's K–12 programs and services, including the PSAT/NMSQT, AP, Pacesetter, MyRoad, CollegeEd, professional development services and Guidance Publications.

"Lee Jones brings a unique blend of talent and experience to Riverside Publishing," said Steven Dunbar, professor of measurement and statistics, director of the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, University of Iowa. "He is firmly grounded in assessment policy and practice and will provide leadership in developing research-based solutions to the challenges of K–12 testing."

Jim Nicholson, who had been serving as general manager of Riverside Publishing, will return to his role as chief operating officer of Houghton Mifflin Assessment Group.
